Iris is a single, middle-aged woman living in Greenwich Village. She teaches creative writing and is editing a collection of correspondence by her old friend Walter. Then Walter dies by suicide and, before you can say 'kennel' she finds herself manipulated by his latest wife into taking in his huge Great Dane, Apollo, who is clearly in mourning. The trouble is that her rent-controlled flat is tiny and dogs are strictly forbidden. As Iris begins to bond with Apollo, she may be forced to choose between him and the only flat in Manhattan she can afford. As with the penguins in The Penguin lessons, the dog rather steals the show with its huge sad eyes. Don't act with animals or children! The film is likeable enough, managing to avoid too much sentimentality, as you gradually become aware of how empty Iris's life is.
