| I fear this might be one of the direst films I have seen in recent years. Promoted as an erotic thriller it didn't feel much of a thriller and eroticism is I guess pretty much down to individual tastes. Nicole Kidman play a successful US CEO who put her career and sexually unsatisfying marriage with theatre director Antonio Banderas and two grown teenage children at risk when she falls under the influence of a handsome your new male intern about half her age. Female Dutch writer/director Halina Reijn's claim to be examining female sexuality and control of their bodies ends up being a tale of the intern developing into a control driven and manipulative partner who proceeds to makes Kidman undergo a series of domination related sex and psychological games, which nearly exposes her to a Me Too takedown. The sole saving grace is Kidman's performance whose energy for taking on such roles (think her TV series "Big Little Lies") which captures how a business savvy but emotionally torn CEO might react. P.S. Indirectly the film is a great advert for why you should never take a mobile phone to bed! |
