1950. Madeleine works as a waitress in a French seaside resort caring for the small son, Daniel, she had by a German officer, which caused her to have her head shaven and be publicly shamed on the liberation, cast off by her family. She meets François, son of a wealthy industrialist but himself an eternal student. It's love at first sight and in no time they are married with François adopting Daniel, who is a troubled child, obsessed with his real father whose identity he doesn't know. Madeleine has told François her secret but has he told her all of his?

The film is very episodic, often jumping forward in time by several years,  although I suppose it all comes together at
the end. It kept my attention.
