Santosh has been married to a policeman for 2 years when he is killed in a riot. Her parents aren't keen to take her back and her in-laws seem to actively loathe her, perhaps because it was a love marriage and not arranged by them. With only a small widow's pension, she accepts an offer to train as a 'woman police officer' herself and is assigned to a middle-aged woman who is brusque but not unkind. Almost at once, there is a case where a man reports his 15-year-old daughter missing. The male police treat him with contempt as he is of the lowest caste and illiterate but when the girl's body turns up raped and murdered two days later, Santosh is part of the investigation. She soon learns that the girl was texting a Muslim boy who has since left town and she tracks him down to the city where her husband died, possibly at Muslim hands. Her colleagues arrest the boy and proceed to torture a confession out of him before he dies. But was he the real perpetrator or someone convenient to pin the crime on? Santosh is no plaster saint: we see her accept a bribe and threaten a witness and she takes a smal part in beating the Muslim boy, perhaps driven by the death of her husband. Even so, the audience is rooting for her. Her mentor tells her that there are two sorts of untouchables in India: the ones no one wants to touch and the ones no one can touch because they are too important. Beautifully made and utterly gripping. Highly recommended.
