Based on a true story (the book was written by the son of Eunice), this film's great strength is showing how the much subsequently reported "disappeared" under military right wing governments (the Brazil example was copied and repeated in Chile and Argentina in subsequent decades) affected the families who were not in the front line of resistance to the military dictatorship.

The lack of information received and having to reinvent themselves in the face of an uncaring government, who communicated nothing about her husband except to issue misleading stories, plus friends wishing to avoid similar treatment, through the film's understated direction and acting becomes all too real in seeing how easily things can slide.

Selling their Rio beachside property and moving to an apartment in São Paulo to survive, with the mother studying and becoming a lawyer for human rights in her late 40s, victory of a sort is finally achieved. Under a new government, a formal death certificate is issued but with no news of where the husband's body may be. A very tragic story movingly told, yet sadly to be repeated around the world as later decades have shown.
