1944. Vermiglio is a remote village in the mountains near the northern border. As Italy's part in the war approaches an end, a son of the village comes home as a deserter, bringing with him Sicilian Pietro, who saved his life. The village shelters both men. Some of the older men call them cowards but to Lucia, eldest daughter of the village schoolmaster, Pietro is a romantic figure and soon the pair are married and expecting a baby. The war ends and Pietro feels that he must pay a visit to his family in Sicily who might not even know that he's still alive. But will he come safely back? The film grew on me after a slow -- and dare I say dull -- start.
