17-year-old Elwood is a good student in a black school in the Deep South in the 1960s, good enough to get into a technical college. Hitchhiking there one day, he's picked up by what turns out to be a stolen car and, when the police catch up with the driver, Elwood is convicted alongside him and sent to Nickel reform school, a segregated Borstal where the black inmates don't always make it out alive. The problem is that it's filmed in a very gimmicky way, from weird angles, sometimes fading in and out of focus, which is a bete noire of mine in film and TV. We don't actually see much of Elwood as he's mostly filmed by what he's looking at, as if we are sitting on his shoulder, which I found distancing. I almost bailed out half way through. I'm glad I didn't as it's a great story: I just hate the pretentious way it's told! I'm sure many people will love it.
