| This was shot largely in secret and the director was imprisoned soon after and sentenced to 8 years in prison - but somehow escaped to the west. So he’s a bit of a cause celebre. The film is set in the weeks of the riots in Tehran in 2022 caused by the killing of a young woman for not wearing a hijab in public. An investigator is promoted (as long as he imposes the death sentence on someone without really knowing they are guilty of whatever) He seems quite sympathetic to start with and adored by his wife who follows his every whim/diktat. His daughters however are influenced by the reporting of the protests and by the fate of one of their friends. Then dad’s gun goes missing and the suspicions as to who took it are devastating. It was subtle, intriguing and compelling in the portrayal Of the fracturing family. But the end didn’t work for me - though I think it was a bit of an extended metaphor for the system and female empowerment (not that Iran yet has much/enough of that) Nominated for best film not in the English language and may get through to the shortlist. |
