Well, I seem to be certainly cycling through the genres in this month’s film viewings!

Next up is the Mafia Mob crime genre launched by “The Godfather” onwards, with Robert De Niro courtesy of prosthetics playing two different style NY gang bosses (Frank Costello and Vito Genovese), script by Nicholas “Goodfellas” Pileggi, and instead of Martin Scorsese the director is Barry “Bugsy” Levinson.

The film sadly shows how a genre can become almost a parody of itself. The endless use of voiceover (being that of Costello, the more politically adept of the two) cannot conceal a very lumbering script. The attempts at confrontations between the two bosses (Genovese being the more volatile) with De Niro playing both characters on screen do not really ignite.

By the end of its two hours, while you may know a little more about the 50s & 60s NY mob history, I did not feel I had seen a great gangster film.
