The genre of films about cults (as opposed to “cult films”) does not have many examples (“Get Out” and Midsommar” being the best two I have seen). This film follows the usual structure but sadly shows it is really hard to be original or creative.

John Malkovich plays a global pop icon (Moretti) who retired 30 years ago to set up and run an artistic community (the Levelists) he runs in New Mexico. Announcing he is coming out of retirement with a new recording, a small group of music journalists who knew him originally, plus a rookie journalist who was born since he retired (Ayo Edebiri best known from “The Bear” series) is invited to the commune for a premiere listening.

From there on the film just gets more lost and confused. While commenting along the way on devout fandom, ambition, and cults, one struggles to follow what the cult’s aim is while the horror mounts. Malkovitch is superb as the charismatic controlling leader, but Edebiri doesn’t seem to have enough of a role to break away from just being the terrified heroine.
