I knew little about the early life of Richard Burton: the drunken father, dead mother, army of siblings. I knew that his birth name was Jenkins and that he changed it but assumed that it was just a stage name. Here we meet Philip Burton, English teacher and occasional playwright, who took young Richard under his wing and made him the star he became. We go from Port Talbot in 1942 to Burton's star-making turn as Prince Hal at Stratford in the 50s. There's a lot to like here, such as the belching chimneys of wartime Port Talbot, but the pace is glacial. I was also wearied by constant innuendos about Philip Burton's homosexuality and the dated implication that it must make him a sexual predator. The Sunday Times reviewer this morning actually said, 'Today, we would call it grooming'. Pathetic!
