| Saw the 70mm film version yesterday in a packed Picturehouse Central. The screen seats over 300 and looks to be at near capacity for many screenings which is an amazing achievement for a three-and-a-half hour film about an architect. Of course it’s about a lot more than that, and the acting is outstanding and the cinematography often breathtaking and perfect for the director’s approach to storytelling. The shot where the train fades into the smoke and mist is just one example of how the director constantly wrong-foots the audience, keeping us expecting one thing and then showing us something else. And how did a film of this scale and ambition get made for ten million dollars? |
