Munich 1972. The Olympic Games are being broadcast to the world live by satellite for the first time. A large ABC sports crew is there. Then shots are fired. 11 Israeli athletes and coaches have been attacked in the village by Palestinian terrorists who are demanding the release of prisoners. Bizarrely, the Games continue for several hours before being suspended as the German authorities dither. We are in the newsroom all the time, and very claustrophobic it is too as the team argue over satellite slots with CBS and among themselves as to whether it's acceptable to show hostages being shot on live TV. They are nonplussed to discover that the terrorists are watching them on TV as they cover a feeble attempt by German police to access the building via the roof! As the hostages and their captors are bussed to a military airfield, a full-scale fire fight breaks out and rumours that the hostages are safe prove false. As their families mourn, the Games resume. As well as being the first Olympics broadcast live, this was the first terrorist situation broadcast live and was watched by almost a billion people worldwide. It's a tight 90 minutes and shot to look like a film from the 70s. I admired it more than I liked it.
