This is as full as I’ve seen an ActOne screen in a good while and, if you want to see it at an IMAX, as the director intended, tough: it’s sold out until the end of the run on September 5th.

This new piece written and directed by Christopher Nolan is a monster at three hours with no interval. And it takes the story of Odysseus quite straight in a way.

Matt Damon and Anne Hathaway lead a vast cast as Mr and Mrs King of Ithaca and there’s a lovely turn from Samantha Morton as Circe.

The cinematography and effects are as vast as the cast - or more so and the whole thing is an exhausting spectacle.

Some of it is really compelling, especially the end
but too many set piece battles and horrors for me. And the script has none of Homer’s rhythm or cadence. I wonder if Telemachus really called his parents mum and dad…

It is a must-see, with some interesting thoughts about the reason for the dark ages, what is responsibility and, almost the role of PTSD, but it’s quite curate’s egg: excellent in parts…
