| This is dividing reviewers: 5 stars in the Times this week; 2 stars in the Sunday Times. Jessie Buckley is either the finest actress of her generation or over-acting something awful. You'll have to decide for yourself. You know the plot. Young William Shakespeare woos older Ann Hathaway (here called Agnes), gets her pregnant and marries her. They have a daughter and then twins, Judith and Hamnet. Hamnet dies young of the plague. Will writes one of his greatest plays about a prince called Hamlet. The film looks lush, proceeds at quite a stately pace. It ends with the first performance of Hamlet. 12-year-old Jacobi Jupe steals the film as Hamnet and must have a bright future in front of him, rather like his older brother Noah, here playing Hamlet at the end. Definite 4 stars from me. |
