My second Italian language film in a week! I must admit given its scenario I was expecting a “Magdalene Laundries with violins” type story but thankfully it is not. Instead, it proved to be a much more interesting film, avoiding many of the cliches one might expect of the historical drama story as outlined in Sara’s posting. The two leads playing Cecilia, the abandoned orphan who has real violin virtuoso skills, and Vivaldi, the priest hired for his musical skills by the orphanage to improve the orchestra’s standing (and the orphanage’s revenues), are excellent. I am not a classical music lover but the playing of and skill with which the music is integrated into the story certainly impressed. Overall, I found it to be a much better film than the few reviews I had read led me to believe.
