Sir Chauncey Savage is a rake and social climber who has married well and bought himself a title. In 1715, he has run through all his wife's money, cheats at cards and is selling off parcels of the estate to more than one buyer. They are reduced to two house servants. Chauncey is tupping the maid while his valet is pleasuring Lady Savage. The two servants are also conspiring together against the couple.

When the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire announce that they are coming to visit for dinner and to stay the night, the Savages see a road back to social acceptability. But there is a Jacobite uprising against the new Hanoverian king and an outbreak of small pox. Everything that can go wrong, does go wrong.

The film is disappointing: while not unenjoyable, it is deeply silly.
