Three films for the price of one. 'Father' sees brother and sister Jeff & Emily visiting their ageing father in the middle of nowhere where he lives in chronic untidiness and confusion. Or is that just what he wants them to think as he mooches money from them, supposedly for repairs to the house? 'Mother' is a novelist and lives in a smart suburb of Dublin. The emotionally cold woman receives a visit from her two daughters who also live in Dublin but come for afternoon tea just once a year. Daughter Lilith doesn't want her mother to know that she is gay, which suggests that she is judgemental. 'Brother & Sister' are Billy and Skye, American twins clearing out the Paris apartment of their Bohemian parents after they die in a plane crash. It's all perfectly watchable but very hard to see what point the director is making. Jim Jarmusch has gathered a sparkling cast including Tom Waits, Mayim Bialik, Adam Driver, Charlotte Rampling, Cate Blanchett and Vicki Krieps (whose slight foreign accent is never explained in 'Mother') but hasn't really given them enough to do. |
