Venice. Early 1700s. The girl’s orphanage and its orchestra just isn’t generating the attention or income the foundlings need to survive. The music is dull; the audiences going elsewhere. So the management bring back Don Antonio to lead and train the girls and write new and exciting pieces for them to perform. And dammit, because he’s Vivaldi, it works. (So far, so accurate) and at least this specialist music school was only orphans, so he didn’t have to deal with any pushy parents (husbandly aside - given he ran a specialist music school!) Plus (ahistorically) there’s this brilliant violinist called - of course - Cecilia. Talk about nominal determinism. She wants to continue to play his work under his baton, but the deal is the girls have to marry, bring a dowry into the orphanage and give up music. She is not keen. It doesn’t end well. The music is copious and fab. It’s lovely to watch. The ending was rather daft I thought: very much a 21st take. No idea if this is how the book on which it was based, ends.
