It’s Camus’ L’etranger, innit… which I’m ashamed to say I haven’t read.

This is a rather beautiful, black and white version with a very beautiful anti-hero. His honesty is bleak and philosophy bleaker but it’s that which is the focus, rather than the killing of “the Arab” (named here but not in the book apparently). The casual racism and injustice of the colonising French is not over-done and the sensibility not too 21st century.

Hard to be engaged by an alienating culture and rationale, but it nearly does it
