Meurseult is a lowly clerk in Algiers in the ?1930s. We first meet him as he is thrown into a rat-infested prison cell with a dozen other men. He is accused of murder. We fall back to the day he received a telegram informing him that his mother had died in her care home. He's given 2 days leave to attend her funeral and people notice his lack of grief. Back in Algiers, he runs into Marie, whom he knew a while back, and they rekindle their relationship but, again, he is incapable of showing any feeling. When she asks 'Do you love me?', he replies 'I don't think so'. When his friend Raymond falls out with an Arab family, things start to escalate and Meurseult ends up shooting an Arab man dead. If he is found guilty of premeditated murder then he will face the guillotine. Francois Ozon has made the film as if he was making one in the 1930s, starkly monochrome, no bells or whistles. I was gripped from start to finish.
