Some 30 people are gathered by a genealogist. They are the descendants of a woman named Adele with was born in Normandy in the 1870s. There is a rundown house which belongs to her heirs and which Big Business wants to buy up, demolish and turn into a Mall. The house has been abandoned since 1944. The heirs choose 4 of their number to represent them. The house is full of things that need investigating and sorting.

Now we fall back in time to the 1890s as Adele leaves Normandy for Paris in search of the mother who abandoned her when she was a year old, leaving behind the young man who is in love with her. On the way, she falls in with two nice young men, Lucien and Anatole, a photographer and a painter, who are also heading to Paris to find work and make their fortunes. She joins them at their lodgings and both seem ready to fall in love.

It comes as no great surprise that her mother Odette is working in a brothel. After Adele's initial horror, the two women start to bond and she learns that her father was one of two men, a photographer and painter.

As the two threads of plot unfold, our heirs take drugs one evening and two of them hallucinate themselves back to the 1870s and the dawn of Impressionism. In the house, they have found a painting which may be an unknown Monet.

The film is a delight, unusual and original. Highly recommended.
