John This is tiresome. My point about atheism was that any creed can be co opted to further a tyrants ambition. That includes atheism, a fundamental version of which has been used to justify murder. ** "So we should only look at Christianity "before kings and princes and political machinations got a hold of the idea that this religion could be useful"? Presumably popes would also fall within this category, including those who launched numerous crusades and pogroms, killing hundreds of thousands of Muslims and Jews?"** Please stop twisting my words. I was suggesting a comparison between the early years of the two faiths would give a better idea of the fundamentals of that faith before powerful leaders got hold of the idea that it coud be useful to ride on the coat tails of faith, especially when trying to manipulate unlettered peasants into murdering and being murdered. Either your own grasp of this period of history is lacking or you are deliberately omitting the first 3 centurys of the Christian church. At that time there were several patriarchs of the church, not just the one in Rome. Across the ancient world many of them were martyred. The Borgias came later John. **"It is an interesting if convenient view, but not one that sits well with the Catholic faith."** Well this one did make me smile. You certainly make an interesting mouthpiece for what the catholic church says about itself. Unfortunately you are not a very credible one, particular in light of your revisioning of church history to the extent of censoring out the martyrs. I'll take a pass on your opinion and am pretty confident that what I said earlier is in no way at odds with the record of history let alone the catholic church. ( Do you think the Catholic Church has a different 'history' from the regular one?) **"Instead, the myth of a early period when all Christians were good and equal, following in the steps of the peace-loving Jesus, sits better with C14 heretical beliefs. "When Adam delved, and Eve span, who was then the gentleman?"** Good Lord. It's not smart to tell someone that you have only met online, whose background you are entirely unfamiliar with, that she needs to 'read more history' and then come out with a blooper like that. We are talking about the early church ( centuries 1-4) and you reference Adam and Eve? And I've no idea what c14 heretical beliefs are. Is that carbon dating? Oh well. The good news is that I'm losing interest in this form of discussion. And I'm sensing that you are someone who likes the last word, so be my guest and help yourself to it. Peace. |
