"The racism isn't all one way: my mother exchanged pleasantries with a neighbour who is sub-continent Asian, only to hear make overtly anti-semitic comments in the next breath (not knowing mum's Jewishness!)" Interesting, Sara. Mind you, I've heard of white gentiles doing the same thing. Back in the 80s, when I knew a certain person called Shami Chakrabarti, she told me about how she and three blokes had been doing some canvassing for the SDP in the local elections in Harrow. After the canvassing was over, a couple of the guys decide to head for the pub. But the other one says "sorry folks, I can't join you. I've got to be in work early tomorrow or my boss will be upset that I'm not making him enough money. He's Jewish, you see." Well, one of the other blokes was the candidate (someone with the obviously Jewish name of Anthony Goodman!). Shami related to me about how he went red with disbelief. Since then, I have very occasionally heard some pretty extreme anti-semitic remarks from white people in pubs. However, it's rare, and those who voice such views are usually anti-Muslim too. The bottom line is that anti-semitism is a serious issue, but these days I shouldn't think that most Jews suffer from racism in the same way that black people do - for the simple reason that most of them are not visibly Jewish. I'm willing to be corrected on this matter, though. |
