George, I wish I had the answer, but I don't. Short of Islam having a reformation, there will be those who wish to highlight its harshest teachings (and these people include both its opponents and proponents). That said, I've often found Christian fundamentalists to be just as objectionable. Sometimes, problems that seem unsolvable simply end up being resolved: did anyone think the cod war and the Irish conflict would come to an end? You can never tell what the future may hold: but I'm always wary of those who try to use these problems to infer some general failing in the wider multicultural (and, ipso facto, multiracial) society. I know it's a cliche, but the vast majority of people I know who happen to have Islamic names (not all of whom are actually believers, by the way) are perfectly okay. Of course, so-called Islamic fundamentalists are not the only ones who have gone around blowing people up. The BNP nail bomber David Copeland sent quite a few people to their deaths. Nor are the radicals who preach on the street the only anti-social elements in our society: those rioting at the Millwall vs. West Ham match at Upton Park some months ago are a case in point, and I don't think they included any Muslims. |
