Surprised none of the regular posters have commented on the front page story about Toby's idea for a 'Comprehensive Grammar' that will drive the pupils hard to achieve good academic results and be open to all with no selection criteria, a first 'Free school' following a Swedish model which Toby thinks the 'new tory Govt' will endorse. He is talking to Shadow Minister Michael Gove no less. Obviously the local comps are not deemed suitable for the Young family given Toby's own experience! and Toby has stated elsewhere he dreads the cost of private for his four children, so inventing a new type of school, to be up and running by 2012, is Toby's grand design. No way Toby!. Our local schools, Acton High, Twyford, Ellen Wilkinson need parents like Toby to be involved and active to work within PTA's to help foster the standards he wishes. We do not need a crypto Grammar which will detract from our existing schools good work to provide the best education for all the children of Acton. Toby was a reluctant emigre to Acton, he fancied Boscombe Rd, home to a mate, in Shepherds Bush, but was put off by the £1m price for a three storey house. He soon slagged Acton off in print but then found some redeeming/amusing features to write about. He also improved his kids educational chances by moving comparing say Twyford to The Phoenix, which would have been his local comp in Boscombe Rd. I think he wants a private style education for his kids using taxpayers money. Am I right? Iain PS There were several 'Free schools' in the Seventies including one in Leeds, which was well thought of at the time, different philosophy though! |
