John - glad you're over the swine flu it seems. IMHO there is a causative relationship, although there is a cycle of cause and effect. The more middle class families opt to go private the more the state system becomes unrepresentative and has all the challenges to cope without the same level of resources and this cause more middle class people to desert. The areas with the best state schools have no significant proportion of children going to private schools, and middle class families there are more than happy to get a good education without the burden of paying private school fees. It is not shameful for anyone trapped in this system. The only shame is the way the system is and it is up to the people to say enough is enough this has got to change. What you say about faith schools may be right but this is because of the privileges they have as selective schools often with additional private resources and state funding, not because of the faith. To say that teachers in secular schools are less enthusiastic for religious reasons is nonsense. They may have equally good if not superior secular and moral motivation |
