It has always been a puzzle to me that the governors of AHS have not instigated simple changes which other state schools have found to be helpful in raising and mantaining standards. Some practised by other local schools include; attainment testing on arrival in the school and periodically later, Setting for English, Maths, and languages at least (as recommended by Mr. Young,)more organised sport for those physically energetic boys in the early morning (recommended by many boys' only schools), more music, particularly choral and group work (anyone watch the TV programmes about choirs?) an insistance that parents and carers, including foster parents attend parents evenings, and school meetings, specialised sets for immigrants who do not have English on arrival, specialised smaller sets for pupils with identified learning needs in year 7. I'd love to see AHS truly provide education for all, but until the governors make some concessions to the interests of middle class children in the area, many will continue to stay away. More's the pity. |
