The problem for Toby is whether one parent - even one with a pedigree such as his and with access to the media like he has - can make a difference to an entreched existing school in time for it to be the right one for his four children. Presumably he can have no influence on Acton High until he has a child enrolled - which he may see as a little late and rather risky as an option. What I still regret is the demise of the direct grant school - they may have been elitist but they offered bright, working class kids an effective leg up into good schooling and therefore a level of social mobility that just doesn't exist now. |
