Had a day out in Acton yesterday (14 March). Had a first class lunch at More Munchies on Acton “Veil”(!). Has to be the finest quality eaterie in all of Acton, but that’s another story. Anyway, I purposely sat facing the street so that I could watch the world go by. Total number of languages other than English that I heard spoken in More Munchies during the 1 ½ hours I spent there ; 0. Total number of burka-wearers I observed in the street and in More Munchies during that same time : 0. Photos of my trip are on the We LOVE (Present tense!) Acton Facebook site. A bit later I had tea at Acton Park Cafe. Scores on the doors this time were : languages other than English heard : 0. Burka-wearers seen : 0. Obviously it’s a personal perception but I reckon that you hear less English spoken, and see more burkas worn, in Shepherd’s Bush W12 than in Acton W3. Yet W12 is considered a more desirable postcode than W3, with house prices to match. You definitely notice when you cross the border at Old Oak Road/Askew Road and look in estate agents’ windows. I predicted on this forum, a few years ago, that with W12’s house prices comfortably ahead of W3’s, and W4’s heading for the stratosphere, a White Flight INTO Acton W3 would sooner or later occur. Inevitably, I was ridiculed by Tony Price. But judging by these posts, and by the evidence presented to me yesterday by my own eyes and ears, it’s happening. |
