I totally, and without reservation, endorse everything that has been said in defence of present-day Acton, both on this forum and in Angie Bray’s letter. The author of this article, Jane Kelly, is on a fruitless rainbow chase for something that does not exist anywhere in the globalised world of 2013. She would not find it even in Australia, the most patriotic nation in the world with the toughest immigration regulations. I stayed in Parramatta, a Western suburb of Sydney, in 2010. 56% of its population were born outside Australia – mainly India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Vietnam and China. You’d never think that Australia once had a “whites only” immigration policy. Turning back to Acton, I have never felt like a stranger there. I attended the July carnival in Acton Park and the Christmas fair on the Mount last year. Both were attended by a whole raft of nationalities all intent on having a good time, and as such were excellent cultural integrators. I have always found the staff in Morrisons – drawn from many different backgrounds – to be friendly. Acton is very well connected, has some brilliant parks, some very good quality cafes and one of the best art galleries in London. Isn’t it time we started to see the positives? |
