Re being in hospital and the only 'English' patient. I visited my elserly neighbour in Ealing hospital over a period of months last year and can confirm that most of the time he was the only person in his ward who had English as a first language. BTW, he is Irish himself and emigrated here in 1956 as a teenager. He was most anxious not to be placed in residental care in Southall where he had been for a year or so already. Good care, but no one of his kind to talk to and many residents who don't speak English at all. Fortunately he was able to persuade Social Services that he could manage at home, which is great for him. His experience does make me curious about the state of the Health service in Ealing though. |
