I was born in 1940 and was brought up in Acton at 26 Goldsmith Avenue, where we slept in Morrison shelters and listened to the bombers. Then in 1950 we moved to 8 Maple Avenue in the vale, overlooking Bromyard Avenue playing fields. Then after a spell in Watford we moved back to 17 Daffodill St. in Shepherds Bush. I was educated at Derwenwater Infants, where we were herded into the cellar to avoid the doodle bugs, and Junior Schools and after that at Acton Central School. We moved away in 1958 to South Wales. I have the happiest memories possible of every aspect of Acton, it was a beautiful, safe and friendly place. But I must say that I agree with the writer of the article - Acton is no longer where I was brought up and loved so much - I wouldn't regard it as home either. But that doesn't make me a racist bigot, xenophobe or any of the other PC labels mentioned. I worked in Saudi Arabia for 3 years and can honestly say that an Indian lad I worked with by the name of Hamid, who was a Muslim and from Bombay, was one of the nicest - if not THE nicest - people I have ever known. But that does NOT mean that I have to accept the kind of change under discussion, together with the current religious threat. |
