"I'm scratching my head over this one though, how can a fire at a BT property take down the mobile phone networks too?"

Mobile masts need to be connected to the rest of the mobile network and the connections to do this are frequently provided by BT and may go through a major property like Paddington.

BT exchange buildings don't just contain equipment for landline phone service, but equipment for all the other services BT provides, and this includes services provided to mobile phone operators for connecting mobile masts to the the mobile operator's network.
