I also went to the consultation on Friday and was very disappointed to see the density of the build (increasing from 200 plus to 400 plus homes) and the design consisting of different sized blocks with very little green space. When I questioned the 20 storey building the Catalyst representative said that the Council encourage high rise as they have a backlog of people to house - she then went on to say that the high rise would be for private residents to avoid any problems of antisocial behaviour associated with high rise living and social housing! When I queried the parking, Catalyst are providing little, assuming that most people will be travelling by Crossrail. As far as the problem of providing school places and medical care for new residents is concerned, as Catalyst are paying a levy to the Council it would appear that they do not consider this their problem. When I questioned the need for demolishing the existing homes, she said that when they were built in the 80's they were not up to spec and so were all sold off to a Housing Association. Apparently they have electric heating and are single glazed and the residents complain that it is expensive to keep them warm. From memory, these houses were built by Laing Homes for the private sector and were marketed as luxury homes. I remember we had a change of Council from Conservative to Labour at the time of their completion and the whole stock was sold off to a Housing Association. They were officially opened by Neil Kinnock. |
