All parents at Derwentwater will now know this, but its important that any future parents also know the latest council proposals, and can join us in lobbying for change. The simple facts. As of September the council, having manifestly failed to plan for this for 5 years, have spotted that they need additional school places at Primary entry. After lengthy consultation (in which Derwentwater was identified as already having the smallest square metreage per child in the whole borough), the council has decided to ignore all advice and place two additional classrooms onto the asphalt playground - which is the only outside space available for the children. Thereby making Derwentwater a 4 form entry school when everything from catering facilities to assembly spaces can barely cope with the existing demands of 90 child intakes. Derwentwater is a wonderful, caring school making great strides towards Ofsted improvements, but I cannot see how this can happen in circumstances where children are cooped up with less space per head then you would give the residents of an HMP. Its election year and if ever we have the democratic right to hold our local councillors to account it is now. We are in a key swing borough so if you are concerned - make yourselves heard. |
