The council seems to want to fly in the face of common sense. Derwentwater is already statistically the most over-crowded primary school in Acton and to target it as the local school most suitable for expansion seems preposterous. The council's own cabinet report decided that Derwentwater primary school is unsuitable for permanent expansion on a number of grounds- but now the council is arguing a "temporary" seven-year expansion is somehow different. The schools supporters claim that they have not received an explanation in the cabinet report why other schools with more extensive grounds have not been considered for expansion. Where is the evidence of "fair-dealing"? The schools playground and other facilities are already cramped. Under this plan the council will both increase the number of pupils AND simultaneously decrease the available playground space by building two temporary classrooms. Derwentwater is a super school which in spite of difficult circmstances is on the up. The council plan looks badly thought through, deeply inconsistent, palpably unfair and risks undermining the hard work of teachers, the headmaster and parents groups. |
