John I think the problem the Council is contending with is the high number of primary school children seeking places in the state system. Derwentwater used to always have space available but has become more and more popular as resources have been poured in. Less people can afford the private alternative or see any point in paying when the state has a good offer. The Reception block at Derwentwater is as good as anywhere in the private system. The teaching standards are as good too I think. Hence there was 30 children on the waiting list for Reception last year. But the answer is not to cram more and more in on a tiny space. The parents and Governors were working on some excellent plans for the playground last year - these plans would no doubt be torn up if temporary classrooms were erected on the playground. I'm surprised the usually eloquent and persuasive Vlod Barchuk has not been on here; calling me a commie pinko troublemaker etc. He ought to be on here defending himself, particularly as he is up for election. Am worried on this occasion what his lack of response may indicate. Maybe he is just trying to lie low and brazen this one out. |
