Cancelling the building programme is almost certainly a massive mistake. As the recent debacle over local Primary places has shown, there is a fundamental gap in planning at local and National level for the basic numbers of school children, as more and more "brown field" housing developments are green lit and yet no provision is made for the resulting education needs. Regardless of whether it is a free school or not, West London will need more places for Higher Education if we aren't going to end up with battery farm conditions. So if we accept that as a matter of fact, then this becomes more a debate about whether existing schools should be expanded further - or new schools should be opened.... Logically if a new school can use an existing moth balled site, surely that is actually smart use of money all round. The argument then becomes one of ideology about who is running that school, not that there is money being spent on it. |
