| Stella and Gerry are Belfast Catholics, long resident in Glasgow, having left Ireland when Stella was an innocent victim in a sectarian incident during the Troubles. She is very devout, convinced that she experienced a miracle that day. Gerry thinks she was just lucky and devotes himself to whisky. The marriage isn't unhappy, but it's moribund. She buys Gerry a winter break in Amsterdam for Christmas. But she may have an ulterior motive for wanting to go there, one which may leave him abandoned. I realised half way through that I had heard this story before, confirmed by a reference to its being based on a novel in the closing credits, a novel I read in 2019. I found the film a little slow, as I did the novel, even though it's only 90 minutes. Amsterdam looks beautiful in the snow. |
