This is an odd one: filmed in Yorkshire but with a Polish director and funding. Tommy is every decent person's worst nightmare: think of an anti-social act and Tommy and his mates will be strutting round their unnamed Yorkshire city doing it. Then he wakes up one day chained up in a cellar in a remote house in the country. Chris and Catherine have taken him to give him the decent upbringing his parents so singularly failed to provide. Oddly, they take on a cleaner, but Rina is from Macedonia, has visa problems and is hiding from the men who brought her to the UK to be a sex worker. She's not going to be telling anyone about the man chained up in the basement. In a few weeks, they have him reading literary novels and playing chess with their 10-year-old son. He moves into a spare bedroom which once belonged to the couple's elder son but we don't know what misfortune befell him. He is becoming civilised, but is he just biding his time? Stephen Graham and Andrea Riseborough are pitch perfect as the couple though Anson Boon rather steals the film as Tommy. |
