About 40 years ago I went to the Royal Opera House to see a new opera: The Mask of Orpheus by Harrison Birtwhistle. I wasn’t very optimistic about it being a jolly evening but was only really daunted when it became clear, in the middle of Act 1, when Orpheus had sung his way through two arches on his way to the underworld, that I was going to have to listen to him sing his way through another THIRTEEN arches before the end.

It was much the same here. Only about ten minutes in and it was apparent we were going to be taken, step by painful step, through NINE Grand Prix races. And so we were. That’s a LOT of driving a fast car futilely round in circles.

This movie is two and a half hours long and about a half was on a track or in a pit stop.

If you are an F1 fan, this may be your idea of entertainment. It ain’t mine.

And then there’s the plot: washed up driver (Brad Pitt - still beautiful) is persuaded back to the track by Javier Bardem - who could persuade anyone to do anything tbh. There’s a villain - a sort of Richard E Grant line character with no motivation. Weird. And love interest plus feminism in the jaunty Irish Colleen who leads the technical team. And a wary team-mate.

Can they triumph? That would be telling.

Unless you live F1 it’s not worth finding out. If you do, apparently the idiocies on track would drive you potty. They - like the track stars - passed me by.

But Lewis Hamilton was one of the producers. Nuff said.
