| 1940: Tommy Shelby is holed up in the crumbling ruin of his mansion, surrounded by ghosts, trying to write a memoir. His sister Ada, a Birmingham MP, comes to tell him that his illegitimate son Duke has taken over the Peaky Blinders and is making some poor decisions, such as stealing weapons intended for the British army. Tommy doesn't care but then he learns that Duke is involved with some British Fascists working to win the war for Germany. Tommy's back! Cleaned up, heading for Birmingham and as violent as ever. The question is, is Duke the psychopath he seems to be, or will he throw in his lot with his father? Screenwriter Steven Knight keeps us guessing. All Tommy really wants is peace, but can peace only be found at the wrong end of a bullet? I loved it. On Netflix from Thursday but worth seeing on the big screen. |
