"I don't know many people who would thumb their nose at speed limit enforcement etc, " 57% of motorway drivers for a start, according to a research report in 2005 which gave that as the percentage driving over the speed limit. The report said that the average motorway speed is 71 mph. I think it's the arbitrary nature of the limit that people don't accept. Personally, I'm usually more willing to accept and obey a properly marked parking restriction than an arbitrary 70 mph limit that most other drivers ignore. "Why does that bit of kerbside need to be kept clear anyway?" If you go to http://tinyurl.com/mve4rw (Google Street View for this location), presumably taken at a time when the yellow line wasn't in operation, you'll see that the truck is forced towards the centre of the road just before a right-turn lane starts. It doesn't matter if traffic is light, but Horn Lane gets very busy at times, and it does help traffic flow to keep the nearside lane clear. So it's reasonable to restrict parking there to unavoidable loading/unloading. |
