"What intrigues me is that, as a society, we frequently condemn the idea that those who commit crimes might escape punishment by exploiting some legal loophole, but when it comes to the laws regarding motoring, such loopholes are sought - and celebrated - by the public at large" It doesn't surprise or intrigue me. When parking enforcement is perceived as a dodgy racket the public will lose respect for the system and try to play it at its own dodgy game. The same is true of law enforcement, which is why our police force go to great lengths to be seen to be accountable and fair. Parking enforcement is a completely different affair it seems, and unlike the police, most people I know have little respect for it. Nothing to do with differing moral compasses IMO. Incidentally Steve, you're lumping in Steve Jupes stopping off at a cashpoint in a loading bay with 'motoring offences' in general. I don't know many people who would thumb their nose at speed limit enforcement etc, but Steves ticket for getting cash, which isn't heavy, instead of a barrowload of bricks, which is, seems nonsense to me. If it's OK to park for a couple of minutes to load something, then why is it irresponsible to pick up cash? Why does that bit of kerbside need to be kept clear anyway? Naturally, when people feel tricked and fleeced of £50 everytime they blink, they will look for loopholes. |
