I am acutely aware of the issues of pedestrians as I am often one myself and my children will be until they reach the legal age to drive. should they choose to. (I only learnt 3 years ago when my second child was born I didnt find I needed to before then) In the same way that I hope I am setting an example to them in how to be a responsible driver, not speeding, respecting other drivers etc I am trying to teach them to be responsible pedestrians. We never cross the road unless the green man is showing because although i may be able to judge whether it is safe to cross they may not be and we only ever cross the road at a crossing. One of the reasons I didnt learn to drive until I was 34 was a fear of the unpredictability of other drivers but also of pedestrians and cyclists. I know that whoevers fault it was I would not cope well with knowing I had caused injury or worse to someone. I wonder whether the thought crosses the mind of the person dangerously running out in front of a car to get across the road 30 seconds faster than if they had waited or walked to a controlled crossing of the physical or psychological damage they cause to the driver of that car. There are always two sides to every story if we all thought a little more about treating others and behaving towards them as we would want ourselves/parents/children to be treated the world would be a much happier place. I also wonder if every pedestrian that crossed a road dangerously etc got a fine just as motorists do whether they too would have a persecution complex....... |
