This is likely to be Clint Eastwood's last film at the age of 94. Also, he's annoyed that the studio has given it only a limited theatrical release in the US. Justin is a pleasant Everyman in Georgia, a recovered alcoholic with a heavily pregnant wife, who is called for jury service and chosen for the jury on the murder case of a man accused of killing his girlfriend on a deserted road one dark and stormy night. Prosecutor Faith is running for DA and a conviction won't hurt her polling numbers. As the case opens, Justin is horrified to realise that he himself killed the woman that night; he thought his car hit a deer. He decides that his best hope is to get the defendant acquitted but the evidence against him is strong and the rest of the jury are certain of his guilt. We seem to be getting into 12 Angry Men territory but Eastwood's film is more nuanced than that and largely a study in guilt. It's a solid picture, worth seeing. I'd have picked up the pace personally but then I'm not 94. I have a theory about why the studio went lukewarm on it: Americans audiences have a certain mindset when it comes to crime stories, they like to believe that the justice system works, and Eastwood wasn't going to pander to that. It'll keep you guessing to the end.
