| Who knew that the first woman to swim the English Channel was a German New Yorker who took up swimming after nearly dying of measles. And did it in 1926? Not me, or anyone else it seems. Given that - predictably - there’s a LOT of swimming in this movie, it’s actually rather a good watch. Daisy Ripley (also co-produces) plays the lead but the rest of her family are terrific. And Stephen Graham has a delightful cameo. The interesting part is actually the family dynamics, which are gripping. The sexist establishment feels like the most fictional part. Music is good. It was going straight to Disney streaming, but try-out audiences loved it so it got a cinema release and a posh screening suddenly became the U.K. premiere with all the stars attending - and us. So that was jolly! |
