This is another movie featuring the Catholic Church - which emerges as the complete villain as it concerns the Magdalene laundries in Ireland, where single pregnant women were incarcerated in virtual slavery - a practice that went on for decades and affected 56,000 woman.

And it’s also based on the book of the same name by the peerless Claire Keegan. She is a wonderful spare writer: doesn’t waste a word and writes beautiful, short fiction. I came across her through an earlier move: Foster which was wonderful.

This, sadly, isn’t. Much more Hollywood (produced by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck and starring Cillian Murphy - huge box office right now)

But Cillian Murphy’s cheekbones are not enough. It’s very, very slow. Beautiful to look at but…
Even Emily Watson - who is great as the vile mother superior, isn’t on screen for nearly long enough to help.

Whats odd is that a very short book is made into what feels like a rather long film… and then stops before the end.

It was great to see so many people at ActOne watching it, but we were rather bemused by the positive critical reception.

Read the book instead!
