This is set to be one of the oddest films of the year and I may find myself mulling it over for some time. Andrew Scott's Adam is a gay man living alone in an almost empty new-build block of flats in London. The only other person there is Paul Mescal's Harry, who turns up at his door one night quite drunk and makes overtures, which Adam refuses. The two do move on from there over the next few days, though, and Harry seems like the sort of kind and nurturing person that the rather fragile Adam needs, having been orphaned in childhood when his parents died in a car crash. But then Adam heads down to suburban Surrey, to the house where he grew up and, behold, there are his parents, living in 1987 but recognising their middle-aged son and being happy to see him. His mother struggles with his homosexuality but, in general, there is a lot of love and he visits a few times. I didn't entirely recognise these 1980s but then I wasn't living in suburban Surrey. It's a four-hander, with Jamie Bell and Claire Foy playing Adam's parents, with sterling performances all round.
